Archie Manning is stepping down from the College Football Playoff Selection Committee and will be replaced by former Vanderbilt Head Coach Bobby Johnson.

From one classy guy to another, both of likely have an SEC bias, former Vanderbilt Commodores Head Coach Bobby Johnson is going to replace Archie Manning, according to multiple news reports.

Manning had to take a leave of absence during last season as a member of the committee due to health issues. He cited numerous time obligations around the country, according to the report, as his reason for stepping down.

"“I particularly want to watch Peyton and Eli play, in person when I can, and it’s hard to do that when weekends are devoted to watching college games,” he added. “This is not an easy choice, but it’s the right choice for Olivia and me.”"

Manning’s replacement, Bobby Johnson, knows football as well as anybody. Here on this site, Penn State head coach James Franklin is hailed as a genius for doing the impossible and taking Vanderbilt to a bowl game three years in a row.

But Johnson did it first in 2008, when the SEC East was much tougher.

Before arriving at Vanderbilt in 2002, Johnson coached the Furman Paladins for eight years, taking them to the NCAA Division I-AA Tournament Football Championship each of their final three years, including a loss in the championship game in 2001.

Given the scrutiny the selection committee will take on a yearly basis with the controversy sure to come out of each year, Johnson clearly likes tough projects and the stress that comes with it.

Trying to win at Vanderbilt is stressful enough.

Which one is tougher? That is the million-dollar question.

But hey, if Johnson wants to continue to, as he says, “serve the game,” this is a good way to do so. At least the stress will no longer be from the sidelines.
