USC added some size to their 2016 recruiting class with the commitment from four-star offensive tackle Nathan Smith on Wednesday.

Nathan Smith (Murrieta, CA. Murrieta Mesa) committed to the USC Trojans on Wednesday, eight days after he received his scholarship offer from the Pac-12 power and five days after he took an unofficial visit.

The 6-7, 264-pound offensive tackle is the nation’s No. 243 recruit regardless of position, No. 24 offensive tackle and the No. 38 recruit in the state of California, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

He picked USC over offers from the likes of Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon, Notre Dame and UCLA, among others. With today’s commitment of Smith, USC now owns the nation’s No. 27 ranked class and the No. 4 class in the Pac-12, according to the 247Sports team rankings.

There’s no reason to panic at the Trojans low ranking right now as California recruits traditionally slower to commit than their counterparts in the midwest and southeast. Considering how well USC has fared on national signing day the last two years, there’s even less reason to panic.

Smith’s offer and later his visit to USC made the overwhelming favorites for the left tackle who has a long and lean frame that could easily support an extra 35 pounds by the time he enrolls at USC next year.

There’s no reason to believe he can’t maintain the quick feet and agility that made him a coveted recruit and improve as a run blocker by adding good weight in the coming months. Smith is the first offensive player to join the Trojans’ 2016 class that includes three, four-star defensive players.
