Wide Receiver Corey Smith is Poised for a Monster Season
We keep talking about Cardale Jones’s late-season ascension, but what is lost in that is what wide receiver Corey Smith did.
When the Buckeyes beat the Oregon Ducks in the national championship game, Smith had 76 receiving yards, his best performance of the year. And he among everybody else took advantage of Ohio State’s form of an air raid offense that appeared to be on display Saturday.
Smith caught six passes from Jones for 174 yards and two touchdowns, hinting that he could turn into a go-to receiver going into this year.
The departure of Devin Smith does leave an opening at that position, and Corey Smith showed that he might be able to fill that void. He and Jones had a pretty strong connection, and he stood out among everybody else at the position.
Again, this was just a spring game with stat lines that we will never see in a real Ohio State game under Meyer, but it was still impressive.
And Smith could easily become a No. 1 option for whomever the starter is at quarterback once the Fall comes. There is not as much depth at this position as other places, so don’t dismiss Smith’s stat line.
