The Quarterback Job is still Wide Open
With Braxton Miller and J.T. Barrett suffering injuries last year, Urban Meyer only allowed us to see the guy who won the national championship in the spring game. And Cardale Jones went up against Stephen Collier, who likely won’t even be the fourth-stringer next year.
Jones was 19 of 42 with 304 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions along with rushing for 25 yards on eight carries. In reality, the coaching staff just tested Jones’s passing game from the pocket all day and hardly gave anything away.
The elite Ohio State defense, which has a second team that is just as good, new that for the most part Jones was just going to throw it up the whole game, so we really saw nothing.
And without Barrett and Miller, it was clear Saturday that Meyer is leaving the competition wide open for August. And anybody could still take the spot.
Well, any of the top three quarterbacks.
What could be true, though, is that the coaching staff could be testing Jones’s versatility to see if he can do more things than Barrett or Miller. After all, they simply took away his running threat at times Saturday. Perhaps they are trying him more in a pro-style offense.
But there is not enough evidence to definitively say that.
