1.Taking the snaps
Arguably the most important hole on Alabama’s team is the quarterback position. Going into A-Day there were five candidates for the position that all seemed to have an equal shot at becoming the starter.
The five quarterbacks combined to throw three touchdown passes, but they also turned the ball over seven times. Two of those quarterbacks stood out from the pack.
Jacob Coker dominated the snap count with the first team. That alone suggests that he is a clear-cut leader to win the job. Coker managed to execute very well at times, throwing for 183 yards and one touchdown and one interception.
Coker’s pick-six was a poor decision, but he managed to bounce back from it. He had poise some of his teammates lacked and, the rest of his competition turned the ball over at least once.
Freshman Quarterback Blake Barnett also stood out and managed to throw one of the other two touchdowns. Barnett’s youth overshadowed his success. The freshman quarterback looked uncomfortable playing against Alabama’s defense, and he made several mistakes which led to his two interceptions.
David Cornwell accounted for the final touchdown and two more interceptions playing for the second team offense. Cornwell was the only quarterback that really threatened to overtake Coker on the stat sheet and will need a very strong fall camp to overtake Coker for the starting job.
