Talk of Ohio State Quarterback Braxton Miller transferring to Alabama heated up this week, but Miller shouldn’t do it. See why and five better options.

The rejuvenated talk of Braxton Miller hit the news this week after radio host and ESPN personality Paul Finebaum said there is a chance the Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback transfers to Alabama, according to reports.

This is not too surprising of an idea when you think about it. After all, Ohio State has an issue of too many good quarterbacks already, and Miller does not want to lose the job his senior season.

As a result, it makes perfect sense for him to transfer.

However, Alabama is not the place for him to go. Not by a long shot.

After missing all of last season and watching his team win the national championship without him, Miller’s stock clearly fell.

He has a million better situations he could find, and Alabama is not one of them. It seems like a match made in Heaven, but if you pay attention to history and the track record of Nick Saban and the Tide football program in recent years, it becomes clear that is not the case.

First off, Miller would not be guaranteed the starting job given that Jacob Coker has been in the system. And Coker is more familiar with a pro-style offense to begin with. This is a reason he should not transfer to Florida State either, given the five quarterbacks on the Seminoles’ roster.

Second, Saban is not a coach known for opening up the offense. As a result, he has no track record of quarterbacks in the NFL, from Rohan Davey to Matt Mauck to Marcus Randall to JaMarcus Russell at LSU, then John Parker Wilson, Greg McElroy, and AJ McCarron at Alabama.

That conservative offense appeared to change this past year with Lane Kiffin at the helm and Blake Sims at quarterback, but remember that the offense had Amari Cooper at wide receiver, which allowed him to open it up.

And speaking of Kiffin, despite all of the hype around his offenses, can you name one successful quarterback he has produced in the NFL? As head coach or offensive coordinator in college, Kiffin’s quarterbacks include Matt Leinart, John David Booty, Matt Barkley, just barely Cody Kessler, and now Blake Sims. Who’s the star there?

In fact, the one place where Kiffin and Saban cross paths but in separate positions is JaMarcus Russell. He is the combination of their coaching, and look at the failure he became.

So no. Miller should not want to go to Alabama. Nor should he want to go to Florida State. But he should not stay at Ohio State. Here are five better options.
