Domestic violence charges that were given to junior cornerback Cyrus Jones following an incident on Wednesday were dropped on Friday per a report from ESPN. He was given two counts of third-degree domestic violence, one count of harassment and one count of criminal mischief Wednesday morning according to information posted on the Tuscaloosa County Jail website. Jones reportedly took a woman’s cellphone and threatened to assault her in front of a witness.
“Although sufficient probable cause existed for both offenses, the dismissal is based on the fact that Mr. Jones in fact attempted to de-escalate the situation by contacting the Tuscaloosa Police Department,” the Tuscaloosa Police Department said in a statement Friday, via ESPN.com.
Alabama football players have run into trouble with the law several times this spring. The arrest of Jones marks the fourth member of the Crimson Tide taken in by police.
Jones was a key member of the Crimson Tide defense last season, leading a talented secondary with 16 passes defended and three interceptions, the latter of which was tied for the team lead.
He recorded two two-interception games: October 4 against Ole Miss, and November 15 against Mississippi State. Showing he can perform in big games, he recorded a season-high eight tackles (six solo, two assisted) against the Auburn Tigers in what was a thrilling 56-44 victory in the Iron Bowl.
Despite the charges being dropped do you think Alabama could discipline Jones internally for the run-in with the law?
The Crimson Tide open their season on September 5 when they take on the Wisconsin Badgers at AT&T Stadium.
