STEAL

The New England Patriots probably released Vince Wilfork not expecting to be able to replace him so soon without the thought of any loss. But that is exactly what happened on Thursday night when teams continued to pass on Malcom Brown, and the massive defensive tackle fell into Bill Belichick’s lap.

Brown stands at 6’2″ 319 pounds and is just a massive body to clog up the middle. He could play at nose tackled in a 3-4 just as easily as defensive tackle in a 4-3. The best part about Brown is his dramatic improvement, and playing under Charlie Strong for a year has to be a major plus.

It is true that Brown was one of the major first round projected picks with bust potential, but that always hinges on where you are drafted. In this case, he is going to a New England Patriots team that has lots of very good defensive players and gets Jerod Mayo back healthy, so he can do what he does best up front: get a major push.

Brown was never the problem for the Texas Longhorns last year, and with six and a half sacks, including two multi-sack games, Brown has lots of versatility as well. 38 solo tackles in a conference with lots of spread and air raid offenses designed to limit what defensive tackles can do, and you’ve got a heck of a player on your hands.
. DT (Texas Longhorns). Round 1, Pick 32 (New England Patriots). Malcom Brown. 4. player. 47
