Texas A&M Aggies: 2015 vs 2014 NFL Draft Comparison

Texas A&M had one first round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft but how well did the Aggies do compared to their highly publicized 2014 class?

So, how did the Texas A&M Aggies fair in the 2015 NFL Draft?

They certainly did not reach the heights of the 2014 draft class, yet the program did extend its first-round streak with the selection of left tackle Cedric Ogbuehi (6’5″, 306-pounds) at No. 21 overall by the Cincinnati Bengals. The selection of Ogbuehi marked the fifth straight season that the Aggies have had at least one first-round pick.

Additionally, there is a trend of left tackles being selected early in the draft from A&M. The pattern should not change come the 2016 NFL Draft with Germain Ifedi, listed at 6’5″ and 320 pounds, moving from the right to the left tackle position for the start of the Aggies’ 2015 campaign. If the gargantuan lineman stays injury free, look for him to be a top-10 selection next year.

The only other Aggie to be drafted in 2015 was the enormous 6’4″, 330-pound offensive guard, Jarvis Harrison. Going to the New York Jets in the fifth-round (No. 152 overall), Harrison will likely play at the left guard position. However, he is versatile enough to fill a void at right guard if needed.

Yes, these two offensive linemen,Ogbuehi and Harrison, were the only two A&M players to get selected in the entire draft in 2015. A stark difference from last year — three Aggies were snatched in just the first-round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

In order of selection in the 2014 draft, left tackle Jake Matthews (6’5″, 309-pounds) was picked No. 6 overall by the Atlanta Falcons. Matthews protected the Falcons’ franchise quarterback Matt “Matty Ice” Ryan’s blind side in his rookie season playing with the big boys in the NFL. In fact, Matthews held his own against older cousin Clay in their only matchup of 2014. Clay, linebacker of the Green Bay Packers, also happens to be a Campbell’s Chunky Soup megastar.

Wide receiver Mike Evans (6’5″, 231-pounds) was taken immediately after Matthews as the No. 7 overall pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Evans was a rookie beast for the Bucs, hauling in 68 receptions for 1,051 yards and 12 touchdowns — a huge red zone target, his remarkable touchdown total set a franchise record for the Bucs.

Lastly, quarterback Johnny Manziel (6’0″ and 213-pounds) was selected No. 22 overall by the Cleveland Browns. The Dawg Pound greeted “Johnny Football” with open arms in 2014, yet he failed to come close to expectations. Now, after a three month stretch of rehab for drug and alcohol abuse, Manziel seems to finally be getting his life in order. After moving from downtown Cleveland to the suburbs, Manziel is beginning to make the right decisions that will have him competing along with Josh McCown for the Browns’ starting QB job.

Okay, so the Aggies’ picks in the first-round of the 2014 NFL Draft trumped all of their selections in the 2015 draft. However, look for both Ogbuehi and Harrison to start on the offensive line for the Bengals and Jets respectively — both studs could make a gigantic impact in their rookie seasons in the NFL.
