Report: Florida State favorites to land Notre Dame transfer Everett Golson
The Florida State Seminoles are reportedly the frontrunner for Notre Dame transfer quarterback Everett Golson.
The options for former Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson are shrinking after his former team blocked him from transferring to any team on their 2015 schedule and some Big Ten teams and now a reported visit he had scheduled for South Carolina was called inaccurate by Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman.

But one option still on the table is a transfer to Florida State to replace Jameis Winston as the Seminoles starting quarterback. Florida State was one of the early favorites for Golson after he announced his plans last week, but now Ryan Bartow of 247Sports reports they are the favorite.
“Barring a last-minute change of heart or any influence from elsewhere, [Florida State’s] where he’s headed,” one source tells Bartow.
Good news if you’re a Florida State fan to be sure, but the “barring any influence from elsewhere” means this is far from over if Golson is intent on visiting other schools like Georgia and South Carolina that 247Sports previously reported he was doing this week.
That report from 247Sports also said Georgia and South Carolina were the two teams to beat but an SEC Bylaw 14.1.15.1 (d) could make a transfer to the conference difficult considering he was suspended for 2013 for what Golson referred to as poor academic judgment and because he only has one year of eligibility remaining.
So with Golson having a few hurdles to clear to transfer to Georgia, South Carolina or LSU and Notre Dame blocking a potential move to Texas, Golson is now forced to look at a very tantalizing option in Florida State where Sean Maguire is penciled in as the team’s starter heading into fall camp.
Maguire made his first career start last year in the overtime win against Clemson when Winston served a one-game suspension and has completed 28-of-70 career attempts for three touchdowns and four interceptions.
Behind Maguire is redshirt freshman J.J. Consentino so if Golson is looking at the depth chart to help him make his decision, he has to be encouraged by what he sees at Florida State.
Golson nearly upset Florida State in Tallahassee last year before the game-winning touchdown was nullified due to a Notre Dame penalty and Jalen Ramsey picked off Golson in the end zone on the game’s final play. Golson was 31-0f-52 passing for 313 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions that night.
For the season, Golson completed 60 percent of his passes in 2014 for 3,445 yards, 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He added 283 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground but also lost eight fumbles.
Clearly he would be an upgrade to Maguire at Florida State with his experience and production and would keep Florida State in the national championship picture as Golson could potentially play in his second title game with a second school after he led Notre Dame to the BCS Championship Game in 2012.
