Just as college football has evolved over time, so has the use of the option on offense. Here is a look at the top 10 option quarterbacks of all time.


Given the way defenses have evolved over the past 10 years, the Triple-Option has nearly died. Sure, a few schools run it. But many of them, particularly schools that were known for it like Nebraska and Oklahoma, have abandoned.

Even Bill Snyder has abandoned, but the death of the triple-option does not mean the death of the option, and there are still great option quarterbacks out there. So who are the best of all time?

Given the way college football has changed over the years, the types of option systems have changed as well. Rich Rodriguez helped popularize the brilliant idea that you could put the quarterback in shotgun and run the option to protect him from getting hit as much, and then Urban Meyer won two national championships with that system, popularizing the spread option across the country.

The spread has become what the wishbone became in the 1970s.
