Harry Potter – Jim Harbaugh

If college football worked the way Hogwarts did, Jim Harbaugh probably opened his mailbox this past summer and found a nice parchment envelope waiting for him. Upon opening, he would have read, “You’ve just been accepted into the NCAA’s Division I of FBS Teams.”

Harbaugh could choose to not believe it. But then Bob Stoops (Hagrid) would have paid him a visit, clapped him on the shoulder, and said, “You’re a college football head coach, Jim.” And Harbaugh would have embarked on the greatest adventure of his life.

In a way, anytime a new coach starts at a football program a new adventure is beginning. Harbaugh’s case is special, however. Harbaugh is expected to bring a struggling Michigan program out of the dark and into the light, destroying all previous demons and emerging champions.

Harbaugh is also not just another newly promoted coordinator tentatively taking the head coach reigns for the first time. After his extremely successful time in the NFL, Harbaugh comes to the ranks of college as a celebrity even among all the other well-established coaches. Everyone knows his name, everyone knows what he’s done, and now we’re expecting big things from him.

Let’s hope it takes Harbaugh less than seven years to get to a place where he can face off against Nick Saban in the national championship game. Because that’s a Harry Potter vs. Voldemort duel everyone will want to see.
