Nick Saban tells a story about catching a 6-foot, 180-pound tarpon as only the Alabama head coach can.

The SEC spring meetings are underway today and while much of the chatter at the podium from SEC head coaches was about cost of attendance, eight or nine-game conference schedules, transfer rules and satellite camps, the one that stole the show was Nick Saban telling his tale of reeling in a big fish.

No, this isn’t some metaphor where he targeted a recruit and reeled him in as only the Crimson Tide head coach can, this is about him literally reeling in a big fish, as in a 6-foot, 180-pound tarpon on Memorial Day.

Bleacher Report’s Barrett Sallee shares more on Saban’s fishing adventure.

Sounds like another five-star recruit Saban was able to snag, but it sounds like the tarpon may have some character issues after roughing up the Tide head coach.

The tarpon has some fight, which is what you want to see. Saban has no room in his boat for a fish that won’t show a little fight when faced with some adversity.

That is definitely mental toughness. There was no quit in Saban who demands his players give 100 percent physically as well as mentally and the mental toughness required to keep reeling that big fish in showed Saban practices what he preaches.

Not only does Saban have an eye for defensive lineman and running backs, but he also has an eye for tarpon. Who knew?
