Texas suffered bad losses to Iowa State and Kansas State with Baylor and Oklahoma State as other losses in the mix, and soon they were 4-6. Then they lost to Texas A&M at the end of the year to fall to 5-7, their first losing season since 1997.

Gilbert lost his starting job and was forced to transfer at the end of the year, and all of a sudden Texas did not matter in the world of college football. The downhill slide began with this season, and Brown was out the door three years later. Strong has now been tasked with fixing the issue.

This is another ranking that never should have been as high as it was. But, like Kiffin at USC, this was the beginning of the end for Mack Brown and his tenure at Texas. A combination of overrated recruits coming to Austin and heartbreaking losses made this year a disaster.

Coming off of a national championship loss, even with Colt McCoy one, Texas appeared to have enough talent to still be elite behind former five-star recruit Garrett Gilbert. Experts ranked them in the top-five as a result.
