Four-star safety Shurod Thompson decommits from California
Four-star safety Shurod Thompson decommitted from California on Tuesday, shrinking the Bears 2016 recruiting class.
The California Golden Bears received some unfortunate news today as 2016 four-star safety Shurod Thompson (Brentwood CA. Liberty) decommitted from the program. This news was first reported by Justin Hopkins of 247Sports who delivered the message via a tweet.
Thompson is ranked the No. 112 overall player in the class of 2016, the No. 5 safety, and the No. 16 player in his class from the state of California.

He received 11 offers in total with the majority of them coming from the West Coast. He was heavily recruited by the Pac-12 as Arizona, Arizona State, California Oregon,, UCLA, USC , and Washington all extended offers. In addition, he received offers from Boise State, Colorado State, San Jose State, and Weber State.
California secondary coach Greg Burns served as the primary coach in Thompson’s recruitment.
Currently, the Golden Bears recruiting class ranks No. 33 nationally and No. 5 in the Pac-12. With the departure of Thompson, the Bears now only have one four-star recruit in the class with safety Marquel Dismuke (Calabasas, CA.) serving that role.
Thompson had a commendable year for Liberty in the 2014 campaign as he notched 51 tackles and three interceptions, showing that he possesses playmaking ability.
Where will he go next? My guess is that he will stay on the West Coast, maybe even in-state as three of the offers he received were from schools in California. This is a loss for California as they could use Thompson’s playmaking ability and instincts of the ball.
However, they still have the commitment from Dismuke at safety. Could that have played a role in Thompson’s departure? My guess is that it may have. Thompson probably did not want to have to fight for a spot at safety, a fight that he may have had the potential to lose.
And so, new beginnings have started for both Thompson and the Golden Bears. It will be interesting to see if he stays on the West Coast or explores opportunities elsewhere.
