Notre Dame picked up a commitment Tuesday as three-star 2016 outside linebacker Jamir Jones (Rochester, NY . Aquinas Institute) committed to the program, according to Tom Loy of 247Sports. He made the announcement via Twitter earlier Tuesday afternoon.

Jones is touted at the No. 905 player in his class, the No. 64 outside linebacker, and the No.3 player in the state of New York, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. It should be noted that the program is recruiting him at the defensive end position.

He was recruited by defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder who served as his primary recruiter while Mike Elston, who doubles as the special teams coordinator and defensive line coach took on the role of secondary recruiter.

Jones received eight offers in total with all of them coming from the eastern region. Boston College, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Old Dominion, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, and Syracuse extended offers to Jones, who deemed the Fighting Irish to be the best fit.

In his sophomore campaign for Aquinas Institute, he tallied 47 tackles, 15 of those for a loss and an interception that he returned for a touchdown. With this commitment, the 2016 Irish class ranks No. 28 nationally and tops among the independent programs, according to the 247Sports team rankings.

This commitment is certainly a special one for Jones, who follows his older brother Jarron Jones to South Bend. An offer from Notre Dame is one that he has waited for. He told the Irish247 blog that an offer from the Gold and Blue “would mean so much.” and he has certainly gotten his wish.

In watching some of his highlights, it seems as though Jones was a man among boys, often breezing by his man and making solid tackles. Also noticeable was how he let the play develop before making a tackle, in particular when an opposing running back had the ball. In those cases,  he did an excellent job of sizing up his man and reading the play before making a tackle. Once he did that, he stood firm and made the play. Having those types of instincts is crucial to become a successful football player.

The Irish picked up an excellent commitment today in Jones, one that they hope can be a part of their defensive line in the future.
