Breakout Player to Watch: Lorenzo Nunez

The amount of latent individual talent on the South Carolina football team is truly astounding, which makes identifying just one breakout player very difficult. It could be argued that Pharoh Cooper, Marquavius Lewis, Jonathan Walton, and David Williams are all potential breakouts, but almost all of these players have already made a name for themselves on the team.

There is one man who has definitely not made a name for himself yet, and that’s because he’s a true freshman. I’m calling it now with a bold prediction: Lorenzo Nunez will make that name in 2015.

Let’s be clear. Naming Nunez as USC’s breakout does not mean I think he will be the starting quarterback this season. But I do think that he will at least be the backup, and as the backup he most likely will see some playing time no matter how short that time is. During that time on the field, Nunez will then show us what he is truly capable of.

On tape, Nunez shines in areas that the other South Carolina quarterbacks do not. Nunez is an accomplished scrambler, able to buy time in the pocket for his receivers to get open. He also is a true dual-threat, with the ability to really turn on the speed when he’s decided to run. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Nunez is on the field for a few plays not as the quarterback but as another offensive weapon the quarterback can use. He has the potential to make the run game dynamic and to confuse opposing defenses.

In conclusion, expect great things from Nunez.
