While normally 3-star recruits aren’t cause for a lot of hoopla and celebration, this was a tight end who the Bulldogs really wanted, and UGA tight ends coach John Lilly was obviously excited about the commit as shown in his tweet.

Walston, out of Wilmington, N.C. (New Hanover) is the No. 19 player in the state of North Carolina, and the No. 17 tight end in the nation according to 247 Sports composite rankings, and most had predicted him to choose UNC over the dozens of other offers he had received.

The addition of Walston gives Georgia 12 hard commits for the 2016 class, who is currently ranked 11th in the nation by 247 Sports. The tight end position is believed to be something that Georgia will focus more heavily on under new offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and his staff.

Walston, who checks in at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, will be added to the already growing mix of talented tight ends on Georgia’s roster. As seen in his Hudl video below, he’s got soft hands and the ability to use a good burst of speed to get off the line or pull away from linebackers in coverage. He’ll need to add a little bulk to his frame and work on using his arms better in blocking techniques, but the fundamentals are there.

This was a commit the Bulldogs were hoping to get, and obviously with the No. 1 quarterback (and player) in the nation Jacob Eason coming in next season, having big, fast targets will be something to ease his transition.
