A Defensive Player Wins the Heisman Trophy

The last time a defensive player won the Heisman was Charles Woodson in 1997, who played cornerback and punt returner for the Michigan Wolverines. There have been a few candidates who came close, most recently Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o, but the domination of offensive players, particularly quarterback has continued.

Defense has become a premium in college football, and there are coaches out there who are getting back to the old school of winning games by running the ball and playing dominant defense. The new wave of spread and option attacks has forced defensive coordinators to become creative, and has given opportunities for defensive players to really shine.

I have no idea who it will be (more than likely someone out of the SEC or Pac-12), but this is the year defense breaks through the Heisman barrier again.
