Steve Spurrier throws shade at Arkansas, Tennessee at SEC Media Days

Steve Spurrier had his turn at the mic at SEC Media Days and the South Carolina Gamecocks head coach didn’t disappoint and took a not-so-subtle jab at Arkansas and Tennessee in the process.

South Carolina had their streak of three-straight 11-win seasons and three-straight top-10 finishes come to an end last year when the Gamecocks finished 7-6.

The result was a disappointing one for Spurrier and his Gamecocks but he offered up a different perspective when he spoke at his 23rd SEC Media Days and compared South Carolina’s 7-6 to that of Arkansas and Tennessee who had identical records.

Arkansas and Tennessee had successful seasons considering how they fared in previous years and Spurrier said they were “doing cartwheels” with that record while the perception is South Carolina was a bad team with the same record.

It’s a matter of perception but not all records are created equal. Arkansas improved from a three-win team in Bret Bielema’s first season with the Hogs and Tennessee improved from a five-win team in Butch Jones’ first season.

Arkansas and Tennessee are rising programs and are in line to improve on their 7-6 seasons from last year while Spurrier’s Gamecocks may be stuck in the seven-win territory with an unsettled quarterback situation.

Yes, Spurrier is one of the best quotes in college football history. Heck, he’s one of the best soundbites in coaching history, but his trolling or throwing shade or whatever you wanna call it at Tennessee and Arkansas doesn’t hold much weight.

He didn’t mean to take a shot at their programs but rather say he was pleased with his team and just as happy with the record as Arkansas and Tennessee was about their success.

But I don’t think it will be perceived that way.
