Penn State Nittany Lions remove names on back of jerseys

The Penn State Nittany Lions will have a new, old look when they take the field this year.

Former Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien ushered in a new era in Happy Valley when he succeeded Joe Paterno as the head coach of the Nittany Lions in 2012 and put names on the backs of jerseys for the first time in program history.

O’Brien had good intentions when he broke the longstanding tradition when he said he put the names on the back in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal and wanted to reward the players for their resolve and dedication to the program.

However, with O’Brien ditching Penn State for the NFL prior to last year, the Nittany Lions are going back to their classic look and will no longer have names on the backs of jerseys beginning this year.

“We are playing for one goal, one university & only one name that truly matters, Penn State,” said head coach James Franklin.

Being a traditionalist, I love the move to go back to the classic look Penn State sported for more than a century before O’Brien made the radical change and tried to modernize one of the most iconic uniforms in sports.

A video was released by PSUSports to coincide with the news Penn State is going back to their “basic” look and for Nittany Lions fans, the video below is sure to give you the chills and get you ready for what promises to be a great 2015 season.
