SEC Media Days 2015: LSU’s Leonard Fournette calls Georgia’s Nick Chubb best RB in SEC

Leonard Fournette is a Heisman Trophy candidate in his own right but the LSU sophomore running back thinks Georgia sophomore Nick Chubb is the conference’s top running back.

He was the nation’s No. 1 high school recruit last year and ran for more than 1,000 yards in a crowded backfield at LSU, but Leonard Fournette doesn’t think he’s the best running back in the SEC.

Fournette took a humble approach at SEC Media Days on Thursday when he deferred to fellow sophomore and Georgia running back Nick Chubb as the measuring stick in the SEC and the conference’s lead back.

“I think he is hands-down the best running back in the SEC,” Fournette said. “I’m competing against him every day.”

It’s hard to disagree with Fournette after Chubb ran for 1,547 yards and 14 touchdowns and added 18 catches for 213 yards and two receiving scores as a freshman. Fournette had 1,034 yards and 10 touchdowns on 32 fewer carries than Chubb and added a kickoff return for a touchdown.

It’s cool to see a player as talented as Fournette go the humble route instead of saying he’s the best. It’s okay for him to believe that, but saying as much makes him look like a self-centered egomaniac and Fournette is clearly not that.

Neither is Chubb who if asked the same question as Fournette would likely say Fournette or Alabama’s Derrick Henry is the lead back in the SEC. Whether it’s Fournette, Chubb, Henry, Tennessee’s Jalen Hurd, one thing is certain, the SEC is home to the best collection of running backs in the country.

Who would you rather have on your team? Fournette or Chubb?
