The team wore orange helmets with a retro blue V logo inside a white oval similar to the ones worn in Charlottesville from 1967 to 1974 and a gray facemask. The players donned navy blue jerseys with orange and white trim and white numbers and the retro V on the collar. The pants were white with navy and orange stripes down the side.

The 2012 throwbacks were actually the second time the Cavaliers wore retro uniforms. In 2008, UVA wore white helmets with navy blue facemasks and stripe like the program used from 1984 to 1993.

Virginia wore the Quail-era throwbacks again in 2014 against Kent State.

Most college football throwback uniforms highlight a special team or era of success at a school, but some single out a particular player. In 2012, the Virginia Cavaliers did just that by wearing 1968-style uniforms to honor radio broadcaster Frank Quale, who ran for 1,213 yards and hauled in 30 receptions for 426 yards that season.

Quale, who also played lacrosse at Virginia and had his number 24 retired by the football program, was named ACC Player of the Year and Athlete of the Year in 1968.
