Notre Dame will be without running back Greg Bryant for the season after he was ruled academically ineligible.

Greg Bryant was already suspended to begin the 2015 season, but now Fighting Irish fans will have to wait longer than anticipated after he was ruled academically ineligible for the year, according to Pete Sampson of Irish Illustrated.

Bryant was initially suspended four games for what was termed a violation of team rules at the end of June but now his status with the team moving forward is in jeopardy. The former four-star recruit in the Class of 2013 has failed to live up to his recruiting rank as the nation’s No. 45 overall recruit and No. 6 running back, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Despite his underwhelming production his first two years at Notre Dame, Bryant was still expected to play a significant role in the offense after finishing second on the team with 289 yards and three touchdowns last year.

The loss of Bryant for the entire year means leading returning rusher Tarean Folston will have to carry a bigger load after having 889 yards last year and freshmen Dexter Williams and Josh Adams will be forced into early playing time.

Williams was a four-star recruit in Brian Kelly’s recruiting class this winter and ranked as the nation’s No. 94 overall recruit and No. 11 running back and the 6-2, 208-pound Adams ranked as the No. 304 recruit and No. 26 running back.

Notre Dame opens the season at home against Texas on Sept. 5 so they won’t have a cupcake to begin the season and establish some confidence in the young running backs thrust into duty after Bryant’s academic ineligibility.
