Texas A&M unveiled their black uniforms and helmets they’ll wear for their Halloween game against South Carolina.

When the schedules were released for the 2014 football season the Texas A&M Aggies gained a new cross-divisional rival in South Carolina with a shiny new trophy awarded to the state’s governor versus the school that wins. Still trying to figure that one out but I digress.

To amp up the rivalry a bit this morning Texas A&M and Adidas unveiled a new black uni called “Aggie Nights” that will be worn when the two teams meet up on Halloween. The official statement from the university and Adidas states that the uniform is “centered around an all-black theme for Halloween.”

I’m not a rocket scientist by any stretch of the means but that little nugget of information would lead me to believe that the Texas A&M Aggies will go for a blackout game versus the South Carolina Gamecocks on the 31st of October. Should make for an interesting environment with the bump in attendance from the stadium renovations over the course of the last few years.

Below is the official release from Adidas with a few photos to tease the fan base.

Personally, I think there are some uniforms that shouldn’t be messed with due to the team’s long-standing tradition but in this case I like the direction A&M is taking. It’s edgy and will get the attention of the youth the Aggies are recruiting. Plus, with teams leaving Adidas for Nike in recent years the company needs a home run in the uniform game to attract new clients.

That said, leave it to Adidas to come up with a way to integrate multiple design elements on one uniform. The lines crisscrossing the uniform background remind me of a chain link fence and with multiple zigzag patterns on the uniform the consistency in design is more than lacking.

As far as the overall color scheme, the uniforms look sharp with gray and white accents that include some reflective materials added for a touch of flare. Not sure the reflective material is needed but this could be a night game so I guess Adidas is hoping it will help keep your attention while the players are on the field.

The one element to the design I don’t really care for is the Texas A&M logo on the front of the jersey. It’s too light and not very readable like the player numbers are and I would think the university would want to make that more prominent since viewers as well as fans won’t be able to see the gargantuan Texas A&M logo on the base layer shirt.

Despite all the critiquing on my part what matters will be getting another win over a cross-divisional rival before heading into the final month of regular season play and if it comes while wearing something fancy like this uniform then so be it.
