When Arizona State starting senior quarterback Taylor Kelly went down with a foot injury during the team’s September 13th win against the Colorado Buffaloes, it seemed to be a huge blow to the program’s conference title hopes. However, while we knew that backup Mike Bercovici was a quality depth player, few knew he would be able to put up the kind of numbers that followed his promotion to the starting lineup.

In his first game against UCLA, Bercovici went 42-of-68 for 488 yards and three touchdowns. While the Sun Devils would lose the game in blowout fashion, it was clear that the quarterback position was not going to hold this team back. Bercovici followed up that performance by beating nationally renowned Trojan’s starter Cody Kessler.

The Sun Devil starter threw for 510 yards, five touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He also threw the game-winning touchdown as time expired to Jaelen Strong in what was probably the most exciting game in all of college football in 2014.

Overall, Bercovici threw for almost 1,500 yards in just three games and should probably be the first quarterback off the board in the Pac-12. Especially given the suspect Sun Devil defense and their up-tempo attack.
