Vernon Adams passed his final exam and will be eligible to play at Oregon as a grad transfer this season as he hopes to replace Marcus Mariota as the Ducks starting quarterback.

Mark Helfrich can start talking about the player who could be the difference in a return to the College Football Playoff. Quarterback Vernon Adams passed his final exam in his math class and will be eligible to play for the Oregon Ducks this season, according to Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman,

Helfrich has refused to talk about players who weren’t with the program at Pac-12 Media Days despite the public anointing the Eastern Washington transfer as the successor to Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota as the Ducks starting quarterback.

“I know everybody will want to address the quarterback position,” Helfrich said, via ESPN.com. “And the only thing we’re going to talk about are the people that are here and involved in the program.”

Oregon has been without Adams for the first four days of fall camp and can begin to challenge Jeff Lockie for the starting job.

Lockie served as the backup to Mariota the last two years and has 41 career pass attempts. Adams was the runner-up for the Walter Payton Award, the FCS equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. Over the last two years (25 games) at Eastern Washington, Adams has thrown for 8,477 yards and 80 touchdowns with only 23 interceptions. Adams also is a quality runner with 890 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground in that same span.

Expect to hear Helfrich and college football fans to saying Adams’ name often throughout the season.
