6. University of Phoenix Stadium

Glendale, Arizona

Capacity: 63,400

Record attendance: 78,603, in the 2011 BCS Championship game between the Oregon Ducks and the Auburn Tigers. Auburn won 22-19.

What makes it great: University of Phoenix Stadium is another new stadium. It opened in 2006 and hosts the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals and has hosted the Fiesta Bowl since 2007.

It was designed to look like a coiled rattlesnake, and it possesses the first fully retractable natural grass surface built in the US. The roof is also retractable, and is the first such roof built on an incline thanks to its unique structure.

In 2005, it was named by Business Week as one of the 10 most impressive sports facilities in the world thanks to the roof and field design. It is the only American structure to make the list.

Greatest game played: The 2007 Fiesta Bowl is the pretty clear winner of this title. The 12-0 Boise State Broncos met the 11-2 Oklahoma Sooners and in a game full of twists and turns and trick plays and last second heroics and a sideline marriage proposal. The Broncos shocked the Sooners and the rest of the sports world with a 43-42 victory in overtime, and if you’re wondering how on earth an overtime game has a score like that, you’re in luck.
