The Notre Dame Fighting Irish suffered a devastating injury that could crush their hopes of making the College Football Playoff.

Notre Dame defensive tackle Jarron Jones reportedly suffered a significant knee injury that likely will cause him to miss the upcoming season, according to Pete Sampson of Irish Illustrated.

The exact injury and severity haven’t been disclosed by the school but Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly will meet with the media after Saturday’s practice where he will likely update the status of the redshirt junior defensive tackle.

Jones was already making a comeback from a Lisfranc injury against Louisville that cost him the last two games of last year, including the Music City Bowl win against LSU. Prior to that injury, Jones started 11 games and collected 40 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

Notre Dame is a popular preseason pick to be one of the four teams to make the College Football Playoff this year, but if Jones is lost for the season the chances of that happening took a significant blow on Saturday.

With Jones out for what could be the entire 2015 season, true freshman and four-star recruit Jerry Tillery will be pressed into early duty. Granted he is a highly regarded young talent, but you hate to rush the development of players at the risk of stunting their growth, but the Irish may have no other choice.
