Ricky Town is leaving USC. The former four-star recruit from Ventura, CA requested a transfer, according to Demetric Warren of Varsity Preps.

Town originally committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide before decommitting on January 25, 2014 and committing to USC. He was a five-star recruit and one of the best recruits in the nation as a junior, but finished as the nation’s No. 79 overall recruit, No. 6 pro-style quarterback, and No. 14 player in the state of California per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

For the 2015 season, this should not impact USC in a major way. Barring any major injury, the program will still have senior quarterback and Heisman candidate Cody Kessler.

When USC opens the 2016 season in AT&T Stadium against Alabama it will be with former five-star recruit Max Browne under center after waiting patiently behind Kessler as his backup.

Town would have had an opportunity to compete to be Browne’s backup with fellow true freshman Sam Darnold, but with Darnold one of the fastest rising recruits in the 2015 class and faring well in fall camp, Town’s chances of playing time dwindled.

Town will have to sit out this year and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Sarkisian blocks him from transferring to any Pac-12 schools or to schools on USC’s future schedule. He had offers from Michigan, Texas, Tennessee, Miami, Georgia, LSU, Florida State coming out of high school and any of those programs would make for a logical transfer destination.

USC will be more than fine at quarterback without Town, especially if they are able to sign 2017’s No. 12 overall recruit and No. 1 dual-threat quarterback Tate Martell.
