He was arrested in June for driving under the influence and possession of cocaine on June 6, according to Greenville Online and Swinney suspended Lakip indefinitely on June 24.

In a statement Swinney said then Lakip’s status would be announced “later this summer.” He had less than a gram of cocaine inside a lip balm container.

Lakip appeared in 13 games for the Tigers last season as the team’s starting kicker. He hit rough patch early in the year before returning to form, converting 21-28 on field goals and 43-44 on extra points. In total, that amounted to 106 total points which led Clemson in scoring. However, two of his missed field goals came in the six-point overtime loss to Florida State so even if he makes one of them, Clemson wins in regulation and don’t finish behind the Seminoles in the ACC again.

Richard Huegel was named the starting kicker to begin the year and he kicked a 53-yard field goal in practice so Clemson could be okay without Lakip. Clemson opens with two cupcake opponents in Wofford and Appalachian State for their first two games before traveling to Louisville on a Thursday night game to begin ACC play. That would be the game they could miss their experienced kicker in a road game that could be decided late in the game.
