Pittsburgh Recruiting: Therran Coleman commits to Panthers
Pittsburgh Panthers gain second-ranked cornerback in the state with commitment of Therran Coleman; Pitt chosen over rival West Virginia, others
Rising senior cornerback Therran Coleman announced on Sunday that he is committing to the Pittsburgh Panthers, making him the 10th commit in the 2016 class. A Pittsburgh native out of Brashear High School, Therran made his announcement live via local Pittsburgh TV station KDKA.
A three-star prospect, Coleman is a top quality addition to the Panthers, and Pitt’s fourth commitment out of the Western Pennsylvania area. ESPN, 247Sports, and Rivals all name him within the top 15 recruits in the state, and the second in the state at cornerback behind fellow Pittsburgh resident Damar Hamlin of Central Catholic, who is also being recruited by Pitt. Coleman’s recruitment could have an impact on other recruits in the area, like Hamlin.

Listed at 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds, Therran Coleman plays a variety of positions at Brashear High besides cornerback, including quarterback and wide receiver. However, he will be most likely be used at defensive back on the college level, and has been recruited as such.
Coleman received bids from several teams, and selected Pitt over Arizona State, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, and Pitt’s bitter rival, West Virginia. Therran was pretty high on West Virginia’s radar, one of the highest-ranked defensive backs they were seeking. Being able to snatch him away from their rival is a nice little plus for the Panthers.
He joins a recruiting class made of nine three-star recruits. Only four other commits are defensive players, including outside linebacker Chris Pine and safety Bricen Garner, so Coleman’s addition to the class will be a helpful one for defensive-minded head coach Pat Narduzzi.
Coleman will also be coming into a defense in need of depth in the backs. Of the cornerbacks listed in the initial depth chart for the 2015 season released on Monday, only three of the five have had any playing time, and five of the eight cornerbacks at camp were freshmen. I definitely believe Coleman will be utilized by the Panthers as a freshmen.
