Scooby Wright left in the first quarter with a left knee injury and Rich Rodriguez doesn’t know when he’ll return.

All-American linebacker Scooby Wright left midway through the first quarter with a knee injury, returned and quickly left for good. The Nagurski, Lombardi and Bednarik winner returned to the field with the aid of a cane.

After the Wildcats beat Texas San Antonio 43-32, head coach Rich Rodriguez said he doesn’t know when Wright would be able to return, via ESPN’s Ted Miller.

Not good news as Arizona’s defense wasn’t good without Wright after allowing 332 yards passing and 193 yards on the ground and 32 points to UTSA. With Wright out for an unknown amount of time, Fox Sports’ Stewart Mandel tweets that Wright is getting an MRI and doesn’t think it’s an ACL or MCL. But that’s why you get the MRI.

Mandel’s Fox Sports colleague, Bruce Feldman continued tweeting Wright was suffering shin splints recently.

Wright led the nation in tackles, tackles for loss, forced fumbles and was third in sacks. He was the rare defensive player who could be a potential Heisman Trophy finalist if Arizona could return to the Pac-12 Championship Game. He finished ninth in the vote last year and five players ahead of him are now in the NFL.

College football needs Wright to be healthy just as much as Arizona needs No. 33 to be on the field again this year. Wright is an easy player to root for as a former two-star recruit who developed into the best defensive player in the nation and has the hardware to show for it.

Arizona is at Nevada next week before hosting Northern Arizona and beginning Pac-12 play with the UCLA Bruins. There is no open week this year for Arizona that has been hurt by the injury hard to start the year and are undoubtedly holding their breath Wright hasn’t played his last down this year.
