Clemson WR Mike Williams has fracture in neck area, no timetable for return

Clemson wide receiver Mike Williams has a small fracture in his neck area, but he will be able to play again, but there’s no timetable for that return.

Clemson may have won its season opener against Wofford by a 49-10 score, but not everything was as great as it seemed. Mike Williams, the Tigers’ top receiver left Saturday’s contest when he suffered a neck injury after colliding with the goalpost stanchion as he was falling to the ground. He had to be carted off the field with his neck in a brace.

Head coach Dabo Swinney updated the media on Sunday about Williams’ status and for Tiger fans in particular, the news was encouraging considering the worst-case scenario.

Williams “has small fracture in his neck area,” Swinney said, via Jared Shanker of ESPN.com. “He’ll have an opportunity to play again. Whenever that is I have no idea.”

He will be at class on Monday per a report from Robby Kalland of CBSSports.com, and he appears to be recovering well per Swinney.

Williams was a key part of the Tiger offensive attack in 2014, catching 57 passes for 1,030 yards, which lead the team, and six touchdowns.

This is an unfortunate loss for the Tigers.  Now, they will have to find production elsewhere, whether it be one particular wideout or the entire cast of receivers. One player I would keep an eye on is freshman Ray-Ray McCloud. He snagged eight catches for 80 yards including a 32-yard grab that was his longest of the day. He will be tested next week by an Appalachian State defense that gave up only 136 yards through the air in a 49-0 victory over Howard Saturday.

Overcoming adversity is a big part of college football. Like it or not, adversity will occur and it will be interesting to see how Clemson responds to it as the grind of the season continues on.
