Kansas, oh, Kansas.
The Jayhawks lost in the worst way Saturday. Montell Cozart drove his team down the field to set up the game tying field goal. The team was out of timeouts, so they had to spike the ball if they wanted a chance. Everyone got lined up and all was well, except there was a poor exchange between the center and quarterback. Kansas had fumbled the snap.
Cozart was able to fall back on it, but time expired.
David Beaty’s coaching debut was exciting at times, but ultimately really disappointing. His new air raid offense was very effective at times, but lack of talent and experience really showed. Starting quarterback Montell Cozart played decent; he threw for 291 yards and a touchdown.
However, the most impressive part of the Jayhawk offense was the running game. Ke’aun Kinner ran for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns. Overall the team ran for 285 yards and 3 touchdowns; not bad for an air raid offense.
Kansas’ defense looked porous, as expected. They gave up 293 yards, 3 touchdowns, and no picks to newcomer Zach Lujan. The Jackrabbit’s running back Isaac Wallace also found success against Kansas’ defense; he ran for 118 yards and a touchdown.
It’s going to take Kansas a few years until they’re competing for bowl games again. David Beaty is going to have to recruit a lot of talent because frankly, the Jayhawks don’t have much. I don’t see Kansas moving from the tenth spot this season.
