Notre Dame QB Malik Zaire carted to locker room after gruesome ankle injury

Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire was forced to leave the game against Virginia with a potentially serious ankle injury.

Malik Zaire left in the third quarter of Notre Dame’s game against Virginia with what appeared to be a severe ankle injury and the first-year starting quarterback had to be carted to the locker room.

Zaire could not put any weight on the leg as he was helped off to the sideline where trainers examined him. DeShone Kizer came in to replace Zaire who was so impressive in the Week 1 win against Texas when he completed 19-of-22 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns.

Today, however, was a different story for the first-year starting quarterback who struggled mightily in the first half as the Irish went to half trailing 14-12. Zaire was only 7-of-18 passing for 115 yards and a touchdown vs. the Cavaliers.

Notre Dame is leading 26-14 entering the fourth quarter and look put Virginia away without Zaire, but should he miss any time moving forward, you can pretty much put to bed any hopes of Notre Dame competing for a berth in the College Football Playoff.

Head coach Brian Kelly sure could use Everett Golson right about now after the two-year starter left Notre Dame in the offseason to transfer to Florida State.

Notre Dame hosts Georgia Tech next Saturday, UMass after that and then travel to Clemson on Oct. 3 and if they have to go at it with Kizer under center instead of Zaire, well, that’s not gonna be ideal for the Irish.
