Malik Zaire is out for the season with a fractured ankle suffered in the narrow win against Virginia.

Notre Dame may have avoided the upset at the hands of the Virginia Cavaliers but their win came at a price as they lost starting quarterback Malik Zaire for the rest of the season due to a fractured ankle.

Zaire was sensational in his first regular start last week in leading Notre Dame to a blowout win over Texas when he completed 19-of-22 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns.

He suffered the ankle injury in the third quarter when his right ankle got twisted and landed awkwardly and couldn’t put any pressure on his left immediately after. You can see the video of the injury here. But be mindful that the injury could make your stomach turn.

The first-year starting quarterback tried to walk it off but fell to the ground in considerable pain and had to be carted to the locker room. DeShone Kizer replaced Zaire in the lineup and threw a game-winning touchdown with 12 seconds left to Will Fuller to avoid the upset but Notre Dame will be challenged without their dual-threat signal-caller.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have Everett Golson back in South Bend now? The two-year starting quarterback transferred to Florida State in the spring after he lost the starting job to Zaire. Now the pressure is on Kizer to lead this team who already lost starting running back Tarean Folston in the opener.

But Notre Dame will have to rely on their defense and Kizer if they’re do contend for a spot in the College Football Playoff but with Georgia Tech up next followed by a road trip to Clemson in three weeks and a home game with USC two weeks after that, the Irish may find their playoff hopes dashed.
