Tennessee loses Curt Maggitt to hip injury, out indefinitely

The Tennessee Volunteers will be without one of their best players for an indefinite amount of time after Curt Maggitt injured his hip in the loss to Oklahoma.

Curt Maggitt suffered a non-contact injury to his hip during the second quarter of the Vols double overtime loss to the Oklahoma Sooners and Tennessee announced he will be out indefinitely.

The injury happened when the Vols were in a punt safe and Maggitt just suffered a freak injury that threatens to end his Tennessee career. The fifth-year senior is still being evaluated but there is no timeframe for his return to the field.

The Vols really misses Maggitt in the second half when the game slipped out of their hands and the Sooners were able to steal the game in the second overtime.

They still played okay, but they missed Maggitt’s ability to get into the backfield and disrupt plays. He had three tackles, including two tackles for loss before the injury. He led the team with 11 sacks last year and added 15 tackles for loss last year.

He and defensive end Derek Barnett were expected to be one of the best pair of bookends on the defensive line in the SEC this year, but now Barnett will have Corey Vereen lining up opposite him. And look for true freshman and former five-star recruit Kyle Phillips to see a major increase in playing time.

Phillips didn’t play vs. Oklahoma and only got in during the final moments in the opener against Bowling Green, but now he’ll have to play with Maggitt out indefinitely.
