On Saturday, it was announced that Boston College quarterback Darius Wade would be out for the season with a broken ankle.

Some concerning news came out of Chestnut Hill Saturday as it was announced that Boston College quarterback Darius Wade will miss the remainder of the season with a broken ankle. Wade left last night’s game against Florida State with assistance and head coach Steve Addazio told reporters that the prognosis was not too good.

According to a report from Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated true freshman Jeff Smith is the next man up to take the place of Wade. In last weekend’s 76-0 win over Howard, Smith rushed the ball two times for eight yards and threw an incomplete pass, his only pass of the contest.

As Thamel notes, there is a chance that Wade could receive a medical redshirt, also known as a hardship waiver which would give him another year of eligibility as he has played in less than three contests for the Eagles this season. Wade threw for 232 yards, two touchdowns and an interception this season, and went 4-12 with 47 yards and an interception in last night’s 14-0 loss to Florida State.

Losing Wade, a sophomore is a big blow for the Eagles in terms of his development. Wade showed signs of promise throughout the first two contests, and appeared to be settling into the starting role nicely. Now they have to potentially rely on a true freshman in Smith. This should not affect the gameplan against Northern Illinois too much as the Eagles are a run-first team, and they have a strong core of running backs who are capable of carrying the load offensively

Addazio is tremendous at getting the most out of his players and he will have to work his magic here as the Eagles stay home to face the Huskies next Saturday.
