California RB Daniel Lasco out vs Texas with hip injury

California senior running back Daniel Lasco, a Texas native, is sitting out Saturday’s road game against the Longhorns due to a muscle strain in his hip.

Lasco was looking forward to his homecoming game but was dressed in street clothes during warmups after battling the injury all week. A native of The Woodlands, Texas, Lasco rushed for 1,115 yards last season. He was replaced by sophomore Vic Enwere in the starting lineup, but Khalfani Muhammad should also share playing time against the Longhorns.

Lasco injured his hip in the fourth quarter of the Golden Bears’ 35-7 win over San Diego State last week. He had 19 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown against the Aztecs. His absence was felt immediately on California’s first drive against Texas that saw two carries go for three yards.

Even if Lasco were available, California would’ve relied heavily on its aerial attack. Quarterback Jared Goff threw for over 300 yards in the Golden Bears’ first two games, and he could be a factor in the Heisman race if California proves to be a real threat in the Pac-12 race.

That said, the Golden Bears will definitely need Lasco moving forward. California visits Washington next week, and the Huskies look to be much improved against Utah State today. The game features an intriguing matchup at quarterback between Goff and Huskies freshman Jake Browning.

Following their Pac-12 opener at UW, the Golden Bears host Washington State before starting a challenging stretch against Utah, UCLA, USC and Oregon. If Lasco’s hip hasn’t healed by Oct. 10 at Utah, the Golden Bears could be in trouble.
