Vernon Adams out with broken finger, Oregon to start Jeff Lockie at QB

Oregon quarterback Vernon Adams will not play for the Ducks vs. Georgia Southern as he deals with a broken finger.

Vernon Adams has a broken finger on his throwing hand that the Oregon Ducks starting quarterback said earlier this week wouldn’t prevent him from suiting up with his teammates for their game against Georgia Southern.

With a few more days to reflect on that statement, Oregon decided the best course of action was to sit Adams for today’s game against Georgia Southern to give his broken finger time to heal so it doesn’t linger into the season when he could be hindered against better Pac-12 competition.

With Adams out, Jeff Lockie will get the start in his place after serving as Marcus Mariota’s backup the last two seasons. He has 41 career pass attempts, but his lack of experience shouldn’t be much of an issue against Georgia Southern, especially with Royce Freeman at running back and his weapons out wide.

The hope for Oregon is they sit Adams now against opponents they should have no trouble beating so the finger can heal so he’s 100 percent for the games that hold Pac-12 title implications. Oregon hosts Utah next week before traveling to Colorado, home vs. Washington State and at Washington.

If Adams needs more than one week to let the finger heal, look for Oregon to be cautious, especially if Lockie shows he can manage the game. Oregon just needs to make sure Adams is 100 percent when they travel to Arizona State on Oct. 29.
