The SEC took it on the chin last week with then No. 18 Arkansas losing to Toledo, and Auburn nearly being upset by FCS opponent Jacksonville State. The Missouri Tigers nearly added to SEC sadness last week, just barely escaping, 27-20, in their game against Arkansas State.

The Tigers must like testing fate, because well into the 3rd quarter, Missouri trailed UConn by a 6-2 margin (no, this isn’t a baseball update) before finally putting up their first offensive points of the day to go up 9-6 with just five minutes remaining in the 3rd. While the Missouri defense has looked pretty stout, offense and special teams has been one calamity after another.

Missouri was completely fooled by a fake punt, executed to perfection by UConn, and then had another special teams blunder when Huskies punt nicked Mizzou punt returner Tavon Ross on the foot, and was then recovered by UConn, who was unable to convert the turnover into points.

Offensively, Missouri quarterback Maty Mauk continues his regression with a lot of timid play and indecisiveness, as well as an interception that cost the Tigers. It’s clear fans in Columbia are growing impatient and want to see a change. If Mauk’s play doesn’t return to his old form, that may just happen.

While this isn’t as big as an FCS upset, the No. 22 Tigers would not help the case for SEC dominance by losing to one of the lesser Group of Five programs at home.
