Tennessee’s scoreboard explosion was aided by a strong special teams performance. The Vols scored on both a kickoff and a punt return. Evan Berry took a kick 88 yards to the house and Alvin Kamara scored on a 50-yard punt return.

The Vols’ defense held Western Carolina to 279 yards of offense and forced three turnovers, but did allow 5.7 yards per carry. Tennessee will need to tighten up on the line of scrimmage next week against Florida in next week’s clash in The Swamp, which will be the SEC opener for the Vols.

Tennessee Vols 2-1 (0-0)

Last week: Beat Western Carolina 55-10
Last rank: 7th

One week after a dramatic collapse against Oklahoma, Tennessee regrouped for an easy 55-10 victory over FCS opponent Western Carolina. Quarterback Joshua Dobbs, who struggled a week ago against the Sooners, responded with a 15-for-21 passing performance and threw for 144 yards and two touchdowns.

The blowout score – Tennessee led 41-3 at halftime and 55-3 after the third quarter – allowed backup Quinten Dormady to get some experience. Dormady completed six-of-eight passes for 91 yards and a TD. Nine Tennessee receivers caught passes, and true freshman Preston Williams led the Vols with 98 receiving yards and two touchdowns on three catches. Running back Jalen Hurd had the other Tennessee TD catch, and he also scored on the ground. Hurd gained 68 rushing yards on 11 carries.
