I didn’t think Will Muschamp would prove himself a miracle worker, but I expected Auburn to tackle better and play tougher on defense. Even after last week’s close call against Jacksonville State, I thought the Tigers would bounce back, and even picked them to upset LSU in Baton Rouge.

Oh, how silly I feel. Auburn was completely embarrassed by LSU at Tiger Stadium.

Johnson threw his sixth interception of the season and could have been picked off on at least two other passes. The junior finished 11-for-19 for a paltry 100 yards, and lost a fumble. He did toss two touchdowns (one to Duke Williams, who didn’t catch a pass until the fourth quarter) and broke off a 65-yard TD run, but the game was all but decided by then.

Aside from Johnson’s long gainer, the Auburn rushing attack never got going. On the other 36 carries, the Tigers gained 95 yards (2.6 yards per attempt).

Defensively, Muschamp’s unit allowed 485 total yards – including an eye-popping 411 yards on the ground. Running back Leonard Fournette averaged 12 yards per carry and scored three touchdowns. Auburn defenders regularly bounced off Fournette, or seemingly avoided trying to tackle him at all.

For a team that had national championship expectations, Auburn may be playing to avoid a last place finish in the SEC West when they host Mississippi State next week.

Wow, some of us really overestimated Auburn.

Personally, I didn’t expect the Tigers to win the national title, but I thought they had the talent and coaching to win ten games. I bought in on the Jeremy Johnson hype and thought the quarterback would become one of the best players in the nation – and yes, a Heisman Trophy candidate.
