South Carolina will start true freshman Lorenzo Nunez at quarterback as the Gamecocks look for a spark on offense.

Steve Spurrier will start his third different quarterback in as many weeks as South Carolina turns to true freshman Lorenzo Nunez to start against UCF.

“I think it’s the first true freshman quarterback I’ve ever started, but that’s just where we are right now,” Spurrier said to the media, via Sports Illustrated. “Lorenzo gives us a little spark maybe we need offensively.”

Nunez came in late for the Gamecocks during their loss to the Georgia Bulldogs and was 4-of-5 passing with 18 yards and led the South Carolina with 76 rushing yards.

“It’s time to let him play,” Spurrier said. “He should play a lot this year, barring injury. If he goes out there and plays very well, we could be a one-quarterback team.”

Nunez gets the nod over last week’s starter and former walk-on Perry Orth who was 6-of-17 with 66 yards passing and an interception. He was starting in place of the injured Connor Mitch who has a shoulder injury that will sideline him for an extended period and was also treated at the hospital for a hip infection.

The former four-star recruit was the nation’s No. 10 dual-threat quarterback, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He probably should have been starting last week, but Spurrier probably wanted to play it safe and go with a more experienced option in Orth, even if he’s not as talented as Nunez.
