Ole Miss DT Robert Nkemdiche suffers concussion playing offense

Ole Miss Rebels defensive lineman is out for the rest of the game after suffering a concussion.

Robert Nkemdiche is arguably the best defensive player in the country and a potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. But that hasn’t stopped Ole Miss Rebels head coach Hugh Freeze from getting cute and playing his best player on offense as a short-yardage running back.

Sure, Nkemdiche has three touchdowns, including one of them on a nice catch and run in the season opener, but Freeze may want to reevaluate using his franchise player on offense any longer after Nkemdiche suffered a concussion while playing running back in the first half against the Memphis Tigers.

Nkemdiche was gang tackled by a handful of Memphis defenders and his head was slammed to the Memphis turf and he was slow to get up and proceeded to head to the locker room with trainers at his side before halftime.

With the Rebels trailing the Tigers 31-14 after allowing 31 unanswered points, Ole Miss added injury to insult with the official diagnosis coming in for Nkemdiche that he did in fact suffer a concussion and would be lost for the rest of the game.

His status for next week’s game against the Texas A&M Aggies will have to be monitored closely this week in practice to see if he’ll be able to get through the concussion protocol to return to the game that will have SEC championship implications.
