Saturday, the North Carolina Tar Heels picked up a commitment from 2017 OT Jonah Melton, their first commitment of the class.

In the midst of all the college football action that was taking place Saturday, the North Carolina Tar Heels received a big-time recruit. 2017 four-star offensive tackle Jonah Melton (Mebane, N.C. Eastern Alamance.) committed to the program. He shared the news on his Twitter account. Melton is the No. 114 player in the 2017 class, No. 17 offensive tackle,  and the No. 2 player in the state of North Carolina per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

He notched 13 offers in total, with many of them coming from the ACC as Clemson, Duke, Miami, North Carolina, North Carolina State, and Wake Forest all extended offers his way. He was recruited to the Tar Heels by offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic.

On the North Carolina front, he attended multiple Tar Heel camps on June 7 and June 20 before taking official visits on August 1 and 9. UNC was the first school to contact Melton on September 1 and attended North Carolina’s game against North Carolina AT&T before committing to the program Saturday.

North Carolina now has its first commitment for the 2017 class, which puts them at No. 28 in the country and No. 6 in the ACC per the 247Sports Team Rankings. Melton explained to Ross Martin of 247Sports exactly why he chose to become a Tar Heel.

“It’s a great atmosphere,” Melton said. “The facilities are really nice. I like all the coaches up there. I know they have the program I want to major in and it’s fourth in the nation. So that’s great. Its good football.”
