Baylor Bears quarterback Seth Russell injured his neck in the win against the Iowa State Cyclones and his status for the next game is in question.

No defense has been able to slow down Baylor’s offense this year that entered Saturday’s game with the No. 1 scoring offense but quarterback and Heisman candidate Seth Russell was slowed due to a neck injury in the win against Iowa State.

Russell was injured on a run with less than six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and true freshman Jarrett Stidham can in to replace him for the rest of the game.

Despite the margin, Baylor won 45-27, Bears head coach Art Briles said the injury was severe enough that even if it was a closer game, Russell wouldn’t have returned.

His neck sprain left Briles unsure if he’d be available for the Bears next game.

“We’re going to evaluate Seth in the next few days,” Briles said, via ESPN. “If he’s cleared, he’ll play, because he’s a tough hombre now.”

Update: (5:45 pm) X-rays and a CT scan revealed a fracture in one of the bones in his neck.

Russell will have extra time to get healthy with a bye week next before a Thursday night affair at Kansas State for a on Nov. 5. It’s been a rough season for Bill Snyder’s Wildcats, but if Russell can’t suit up for Baylor this night, it could be what Kansas State needs to have a chance at pulling off the upset.

Even if Russell can’t go, the former five-star recruit Stidham, should be able to produce with Corey Coleman to throw to and Shock Linwood to hand the ball off to and maintain the Bears’ undefeated record.

Should Russell be forced to miss the game, his Heisman candidacy could take a shot. Russell entered today’s game leading the nation in passer rating and touchdowns with and he added two more to his total this year to give him 29 to only six interceptions.
