Georgia Tech returns blocked FG to beat Florida State as time expires (Video)
Georgia Tech beat Florida State after returning a blocked field goal for a touchdown as time expired.
For the first time since 2012, the Florida State Seminoles suffered a loss during the regular season and their ACC winning streak came to an end after the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets stunned the three-time ACC defending champions at the whistle.
One week after the Michigan State Spartans beat the Michigan Wolverines by recovering a fumble and returning it for a touchdown as time expired, a special teams play from Georgia Tech decided this one at the final whistle.
With the game tied at 16 and Florida State and reigning Groza Award winner Roberto Aguayo coming in to attempt the game-winning field goal from 56 yards out, it looked like the Seminoles would sneak past the team they beat in last year’s ACC Championship Game.
Georgia Tech had different ideas, however, and blocked the kick from Aguayo and sophomore defensive back Lance Austin picked it up and rumbled 78 yards for the game-winning touchdown as time expired.
Let this play serve as a reminder that the game is never over until the clock reads triple zeroes, because as if we needed any further proof, this play just reiterates that anything can happen on any given play.
Florida State has to regroup by Nov. 7 when they travel to Clemson to take on Deshaun Watson and the undefeated Tigers if they hope to win a fourth straight ACC title and have a chance to get back to the College Football Playoff.
