The Miami Hurricanes have fired head coach Al Golden after the school suffered their worst loss in program history.

Al Golden entered this season on the hot seat after the Miami Hurricanes regressed in his fourth year at the school last year after showing some signs of progress with a nine-win season in 2013. However, one day after the worst loss in program history, a 58-0 loss to Clemson, Miami has fired Golden.

“Coach Golden has led our program through some very difficult times and he has done so with class, integrity and a true desire to see our students succeed on the field, in the classroom and in the community.” Miami Director of Athletics Blake James said.  “However, we have a proud tradition of excellence at Miami, not just in football but in all sports, and we want to compete for ACC and national championships.  I simply believe that now is the time to bring the Hurricane Family together and rally behind our young men.”

During the loss on Saturday that saw Miami trail 42-0 at halftime several prominent former players like Warren Sapp expressed their disappointment with Golden and demanded a change at the coaching position to restore the pride in the Hurricane football program.

Golden went 32-25 in four-plus seasons and is 0-2 with the Canes in bowl games. He finished with a 17-18 record in ACC games and never finished a year with Miami ranked inside the top 25.

“On behalf of my family I want to thank the University of Miami for a tremendous opportunity,” Golden said, via the school’s website.  “I believe in what we are doing and how we are doing it and we have some outstanding young men in our football program.  Though this moment is difficult, we wish the Canes the best of luck going forward.”

Assistant coach Larry Scott was named the school’s interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
